Sea Us Rise wants less plastic in the world!
Sea Us Rise has a special deal for classrooms attending the USFSP SciFest.
In return for a year’s membership to the Sea Turtle Conservancy, donated by Sea Us Rise, your class pledges to STOP using single-use plastics in your classroom until the end of the school year.
This means:
- Replacing plastic forks, spoons, knives with other utensils (suggestion: have a classroom drawer of utensils);
- Banning plastic water/soda/drink bottles (suggestion: reusable water bottles or paper cups);
- Replacing plastic plates, bowls, and other dishes (suggestion: paper versions).
The Sea Turtle Conservancy aims to protect sea turtles whose lives are in danger through research, education and campaigns – such as beach clean-ups, outdoor lighting and other activities that benefit the natural habitats on which sea turtles depend.
FUN FACT: It’s the world’s oldest sea turtle research and conservation group, founded in 1959 – and it’s based in Florida!
What’s the big deal about single-use plastics?
-
- The big deal is that it’s A BIG DEAL as plastics in the ocean harm sea turtles:
Adult sea turtles get plastics stuck in their stomach, which stops them from properly swallowing food - Large plastics break down into smaller, more toxic microplastics
- Sea turtle hatchlings unknowingly eat microplastics or become tangled up in debris
- 80% of plastic debris in the ocean comes from land – it washes out to sea from beaches and flows through storm drains into streams and rivers…out to sea, too
- The big deal is that it’s A BIG DEAL as plastics in the ocean harm sea turtles:
- If we STOP using single-use plastics, less plastic gets into the ocean. Right?
